Spanish date format
At the beginning, it is important to keep in mind that the way to write the date in Spanish is different from the way it is done in English, especially in the United States. In English, the most common format is month / day / year. However, in Spanish, the correct structure is day / month / year.
For example, 03/10/2025 could be:
- March 10, 2025, in the United States
- October 03, 2025, in Spain
Different ways to write the date in Spanish
Depending on the context, you can find several ways to write the date in Spanish correctly.
The full form with prepositions is very common in written and formal texts. For example:
- Hoy es 28 de julio de 2015 (Today is July 28, 2015)
- Nací el 15 de agosto de 1998 (I was born on August 15, 1998)
While the numeric format (day/month/year) is the most common in many contexts:
- 25/06/2008
- 15/08/1998
We also find the abbreviated format in words which, although less common, is also valid:
- 18-jun-2025
- 15-ago-1998

Common mistakes and tips
If you still have doubts about how to write the date in Spanish, we leave you some tips and common mistakes that you can avoid if you must write the date in any document in Spanish.
Do not confuse the numerical order. Remember, if you see 12/11/2025 in Spanish it is interpreted as November 12, 2025, while in the United States it would mean December 11, 2025. However, you will not have any doubts if the day in the calendar is greater than 12, since it is not possible to have a month 21 or 19.
Write lowercase letters for months. In Spanish, the names of the months are not capitalized (marzo, agosto, diciembre), unlike in English (March, August, December). So, when writing the date in Spanish, remember to always write the months in lowercase as well.
Don't forget the Spanish preposition “de” in the full form of writing the date. Thus, in Spanish we say 22 January 2025, not “22 January 2025”.
