Playa del Carmen Attractions & Highlights
Beaches
As you can well imagine, if a town has the word "playa" (beach) in its name, there's a pretty good chance that their beaches are worth talking about. The warm sunshine, soft white sand and tranquil Caribbean Sea make for top-notch beach-going conditions without the hustle and bustle of nearby Canun. There's a variety of sandy stretches from which to choose, some of which are Mamitas Beach, Shangri-La Beach, Zubul Beach, Coco Beach and Tukan Beach.
Maya ruins
Playa del Carmen is in the heart of Maya country and is literally surrounded by fascinating archaeological sites. In fact, Playa del Carmen is part of Ruta Maya (Maya Route), which links together several of Mexico's most interesting Maya sites, including Xel-Ha, Tulum, Ek Balam and Coba.
Water sports & activities
With fabulous beaches, beautiful water and the huge coral reef running along the Yucatan Peninsula, Playa del Carmen is a paradise for enthusiasts of scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming, boating, fishing... You name it!
Cenotes
Without a doubt one of the Yucatan Peninsula's most interest features, cenotes are surface entrances to underground bodies of water. The result are exposed rock pools filled with clear, clean water and stalactites, stalagmites and other decidedly cool rock formations.
La Quinta Avenida
La Quinta Avenida, or Fifth Avenue, is where the action is in Playa del Carmen. This long, almost entirely pedestrianized avenue runs parallel to the city's coastline and it and its surrounding streets serve up all sorts of hotels, restaurants, shops, bars, cafés and more.
