Located on Spain's northern coastline in a region known for its verdant landscapes and Celtic routes is Gijón, a bustling coastal destination with thousands of years of history under its belt. Its importance as a port town dates back to Roman times, though archaeological evidence points to its being settled well before the arrival of the Romans.

Not long ago, Gijón was a gritty industrial city centered around the manufacturing of metals and chemicals. In more recent times, however, Gijón has seemingly effortlessly stepped into its current role as a popular tourist destination for both national and international travelers. Its attractions range from a polished up Old Quarter to Celtic and Roman ruins, an eclectic array of interesting museums and architecture spanning the 15th through 21st centuries.

When it's time to refuel, be prepared for atmospheric bars and restaurants serving up delicious, hearty dishes yielded from the region's mountains, fertile farmlands and coastline. Afterwards, a night on the town wouldn't be complete with a stop in at least one of Gijón's seemingly infinite sidrerías, rowdy bars where the Asturian beverage of choice - fermented cider - is venerated and consumed in copious amounts.

All in all, Gijón is a wonderful Spanish destination with activities, attractions and plenty of atmosphere. For more information, take a look at our Gijón Guide
