The intimate city of León, situated in northeastern Spain, is a city that combines the monuments and cultural offerings of a sprawling metropolis with the nightlife of a university city and the welcoming atmosphere of a small, friendly town.
At the center of it all is León's 13th-century cathedral, a stunning Gothic edifice boasting breathtaking stained glass windows, dramatic spires and soaring ceilings. Branching out around it are the winding medieval streets, Romanesque churches and Gothic buildings of the Old Quarter. Along with architectural treasures spanning the centuries, the Old Quarter is also home to a large part of the city's medieval walls and even remains of the original Roman walls.
South of the Cathedral is the famous section of the Old Quarter called the "Barrio Húmedo", or "Wet Quarter". Packed with bars, it's the place to go for nocturnal fun. It's also the hub of León's tapas culture, as locals and visitors alike bar-hop for tapas (which, by the way, are almost always free in León when you order a beverage!).
Newer additions like the Antoni Gaudí's Moderniste-style "Casa de los Botines", the funky Museum of Contemporary Art (MUSAC) add a more modern edge to the ancient city streets, and the 13,000-strong university population keeps the atmosphere young and lively.
With all sorts of monuments both new and old, a history that dates back to Roman times, surprisingly wonderful museums, a jam-packed cultural agenda and a nightlife that just won't quite, you won't regret coming to learn Spanish in León.
