Founded in the 1st century by the Romans, the León you see today is a wonderful mix of centuries of history with a modern, forward-looking approach to life.
The city's centerpiece is its magnificent 13th-century cathedral, one of Spain's first and most important Gothic cathedrals. Spreading out around it is León's architecturally stunning Old Quarter, where you meander the narrow alleys through Romanesque and Gothic buildings. You may run into a pilgrim or two en route to Santiago de Compostela, as León is one of the most important stops along the Way of Saint James, a 9th century religious pilgrimage that is still very much alive today.
If you're looking for a fun night on the town, nocturnal revelers head to the Barrio Húmedo (Wet Quarter), a section of the Old Quarter packed with bars serving up copious beverages and heaping plates of tapas.
If you identify yourself as a culture vulture, León certainly won't disappoint. Along with centuries-old architecture, the city offers a jam-packed cultural calendar of exhibitions, concerts, theatre performances, festivals and more. Be sure to stop in for a visit to the MUSAC, a fantastic contemporary art museum that, with its funky, colorful exterior, you just can't miss.
