A preferred summertime destination for its beaches and comfortably warm weather, San Sebastian - or, in Basque, "Donostia" - is a wonderful place to study Spanish.
This coastal destination, which hugs the Bay of La Concha, truly has the best of it all, from modern amenities to delicious cuisine, a pictuesque Old Town, fantastic shopping and great beaches.
The more modern area by the beach caters to those summer vacations from Spain and abroad, who enjoy seaside promenades and the fashionable bars, restaurants and shops near them. A short walk away will bring you into a whole different world, as the Old Quarter is every bit as picturesque, cramped and atmospheric as you would expect from a part of town dating back centuries.
Here, in the Old Quarter's cobblestone streets, is where you'll find the bulk of San Sebastian's historic monuments- old noble palaces, Gothic churches, Baroque façades - as well as a handful of interesting museums, lively bars and great tapas restaurants. Monte Urgull, which rises up behind the Old Quarter, is definitely worth the climb, as the views from the top over the town and sea sprawling out below you are truly marvelous.
