From the picturesque streets of the historic city center to the old world elegance of the beach neighborhood, it's easy to see why Santander has been a top Spanish destination for over 100 years.
Perhaps the most appealing part of Santander is its coastal location. Draped over a wide bay that opens up to the Cantabrian Sea, Santander has wonderful beaches along Spain's spectacular northern coastline. El Sardinero, the main beach, seaside promenade and surrounding area, was developed in the early 20th century and the seaside hotels, restaurants and casinos reflect an old world affluence not unlike that of France's Biarritz resort.
Offsetting the modern European elegance is the city's picturesque historic quarter, brimming with atmospheric tapas bars, old winding lanes, inviting squares, centuries-old buildings and more. There is also a handful of interesting museums worth a visit.
Here you'll find an interesting mix, especially in summer, of vacationing families, friendly locals and perhaps even a backpack-laden religious pilgrim making a stop on his or her way to Santiago de Compostela, pilgrimage destination for over 1,000 years.
