Word of the month... Mascarada
This beautiful word has fallen into disuse. For many people the word in fact recalls opulent 17th century balls complete with luxurious dresses, porcelain masks, impossible hairstyles, and unclear intentions.
Those that understand the word in this way actually have the right idea, because this image could be a good summary of the word’s various meanings. “Mascarada” is a party with people wearing masks, and it also means a group of people who are wearing the same kind of costumes, and it refers to a trap or a conspiracy.
It’s too bad that the word is hardly ever used anymore because it has great poetic possibilities. It’s a good word to save for a time when you’re feeling particularly inspired!
